Call for Participation SPONSORS IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing and Services Society The 2008 IEEE Congress on Services (SERVICES 2008) proudly announces the 2008 Summer School on Services Computing (SU-08). SU-08 is a two-day forum, jointly sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing (TCSVC) and Services Society. SU-08 will be held on July 6-July 7, 2008 (Sunday and Monday), just before IEEE International Conference on Services Computing (SCC 2008) at Hilton Hawaii Village Beach Resort & Spa in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. SU-08 is now calling for participation. Eligible applicants shall be (1) professors in universities whose teaching and research areas are related to Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Web services, Web technology, Software Engineering, IT, and management or (2) industry practitioners who have experiences in services software design and development and are willing to get more involved in Services Computing technology. BACKGROUND Services now account for more than half of the U.S. economy. Services Computing, as a new cross discipline, addresses how to enable IT technology to help people perform business services more efficiently and effectively. From a technology foundation perspective, Services Computing has become a foundational discipline in the modern services industry. IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing (TCSVC) was founded in 2003. Since then, IEEE TCSVC has sponsored a series of flagship international conferences including: IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS), IEEE International Conference on Services Computing (SCC), IEEE Asia Pacific Services Computing Conference (APSCC), European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS), and IEEE Congress on Services (SERVICES), . In 2008, IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC) is also formally launched. In order to further Services Computing education in Universities so as to educate qualified professionals, in July 2007, IEEE Congress on Services (SERVICES 2007) launched a pilot Services University (SU) program in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The SU program comprises three major activities: Services Computing School, curriculum volume initiative, and education methodology summit. OBJECTIVES The central goal of SU-08 is to help educators teach Services Computing courses in their universities, while helping industry practitioners obtain comprehensive understanding of the emerging field. The summer school intends to help participants understand the overall picture of Services Computing, its rationale, foundations, architectural models, and industry-oriented applications and successful cases. Specially, some major solution architectures, enabling technologies and innovative research methods are captured in the whole lifecycle of services innovation research, which includes business componentization, services modeling, services creation, services realization, services annotation, services deployment, services discovery, services composition, services delivery, service-to-service collaboration, services monitoring, services optimization, as well as services management. Participants of this summer school will obtain a comprehensive understanding of the "Services Computing" curriculum initiative and of research advancement. Using the recommended text book "Services Computing" as the basic materials, this summer school aims to help participating educators offer "Services Computing"related courses independently. Other teaching materials will be provided and studied as well, including lecture notes and slides associated with the book. CURRICULUM Part 1: Foundations of Services Computing

TEXT BOOK INSTRUCTORS SU-08 has invited the authors of the book and executive committee members of IEEE TCSVC to serve as the instructors. Dr. Liang-Jie Zhang, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, USA ABOUT THE SPEAKERS 
Dr. Liang-Jie (LJ) Zhang is a Research Staff Member and Program Manager of Application Architectures and Realization at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. He has made significant original contributions to Services Computing innovations and interactive media systems. Zhang is the founding chair of IBM Research's Services Computing Professional Interest Community and has been leading an IBM Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) tooling and architecture research project for years. He has been co-leading IBM's SOA Solution Stack (a.k.a SOA Reference Architecture: Solution View) project since 2004. His new book Services Computing has been published by Springer. He has received 2 IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards, 9 IBM Creative Contribution Awards, an Outstanding Achievement Award by the World Academy of Sciences, and an Innovation Leadership Award from Chinese Institute of Electronics. Dr. Zhang has 36 granted patents and 20 pending patent applications. As the lead inventor, he holds federated Web services discovery and dynamic services composition patents. He is the chair of IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing. He has been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing. 
Dr. Jia Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Department of Computer Science at Northern Illinois University. Zhang co-authors the book titled "Services Computing". She has published over 70 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers. Zhang is serving as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC), International Journal of Web Services Research (JWSR), and the Advances in Web Services Research (AWSR) Book Series, IGI Global. She also serves on Editorial Board of IEEE IT Professional. Zhang serves as Program Vice Chair of IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS 2008 & 2007 & 2006). Her current research interests center around Services Computing, with a focus on QoS testing, data management, mobile learning, and collaborative learning. Zhang received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2000. She is a member of the IEEE. 
Dr. Hong Cai is a Senior Research Staff Member at IBM China Research Laboratory. He has been working in the field of service research for over 10 years. During his more than 10 years of research he has been asked to lead or has established various innovative projects including pervasive computing, service delivery platform, Session Initiation Protocol, enterprise portfolio management, etc. He has published over 40 papers on journals and international conferences and has been awarded more than 10 patents. He is one of the co-authors of the book "Services Computing". He has been serving as program committee member, workshop chair, local arrangement chair and student workshop chair for various IEEE international conferences. He is serving as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC). He is a member of Editorial Review Board of International Journal of Web Services Research. He has been promoting Services Science in Great China Area since 2005, has been invited to teach "Service Computing" courses at Tsinghua University, and has been invited to talk about Services Science at various conferences. He was invited to join the national Expert Collaboration Group of services science (with 7 leading China professors) supported by China Ministry of Education. His current areas of interest include complex network in services, social services, services in 3D/virtual worlds, virtual learning as services, etc. He is currently the chief architect of IBM global virtual learning center of excellence which leverage 3D/virtual world technologies to build virtual learning applications for enterprise users such as managers, sales people, project managers. He got his PhD degree from Tsinghua University at 1997. Dr. Cai is a senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM. 
Dr. Ephraim Feig is a Senior Director at Motorola. Prior to his joining Motorola, he was Chief Technology Officer and Chief Marketing Officer of Kintera, Inc. from 2000 until 2006 and a researcher and R&D manager at IBM from 1980 until 2000. He was elected IEEE Fellow for contributions to signal processing, holds 27 US patents, and has published more than 100 technical articles. Dr. Feig has served as an adjunct professor at several universities, including Columbia University, The City College of New York and New York Polytechnic Institute. He is a founding member of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing and this year's Program Chair of IEEE SCC. He serves on advisory boards at CUNY, UCSD and USD, and is on the board of directors of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. REGISTRATION INFORMATION

CERTIFICATES At the end of the summer school, every participant will receive a Certificate of Appreciation for Completing the 2008 Summer School on Services Computing, issued by the Technical Committee on Services Computing within IEEE Computer Society. After completing a test, each qualified educator or industry practitioner will receive a "Certified Services Computing Instructor" certificate presented by Services Society. The names of the Certified Services Computing Instructors will be published on ServicesUniversity.org and other Services Computing community Web sites. They will be invited to conduct Services University program in their local countries or regions. The summer school is open to all individuals. However, the "Certified Services Computing Instructor" certificate can only be awarded to qualified (1) educators and (2) industry practitioners with Masters or Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science or related areas. |
